How to Practiced an Osmosis

Apparatus and materials :

• a knife
• a dish
• potatoes
• water

Procedure :

• Remove the potato's peel and cut it into two parts
• Make a hole in the center the potato so that it is shaped like a bowl with 0,5 cm of tickness
• Fill the potato bowl with concentrated salt water
• Prepare a plate and fill it with water to 1/2 the height of the potato bowl
• Put the potato filled with salt water into the dish filled with water
• Wait for several minutes,and then observe what is happening to the water surface in the dish and to the salt water surface inside the potato bowl

Result :

If you take a carefull look at the water level water in the dish and the salt water level in the potato bowl, you will find that the water level in the dish decreasse and the salt water level in the potato bowl increasse. It happens because there is movement of some water from the dish to potato bowl. This process is called OSMOSIS. Osmosis is a process a substance movement from a dilute solution to a more concentrate solution.
